Just 15 minutes before President Trump announced an extension of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire on Tuesday, a flurry of trading activity betting on a crude oil downturn flooded the market, with short positions valued at approximately $430 million.

This marks the third instance this month—and the fourth overall—where massive, perfectly timed directional bets have appeared in the oil market moments before major headlines regarding the conflict.

Similar precision trades totaled $500 million in March and approximately $2.1 billion across multiple entries in April.

The "After-Settlement" Strike

According to LSEG data, between 19:54 and 19:56 GMT on Tuesday, the market saw an influx of 4,260 sell orders. At prevailing Brent futures prices, the total value reached $430 million. President Trump officially announced the ceasefire extension at 20:10 GMT.

Notably, these trades occurred during the "post-settlement period" , a window typically characterized by thin liquidity and low volume.

While the initial trades only nudged prices from $100.91 to $100.66, the market plummeted to a low of $96.83 within 60 seconds of the President's announcement.

A Pattern of "Perfect" Timing

The sheer accuracy of these trades over the past month has sparked deep concerns regarding potential insider trading and information leaks:

  • March 23: Investors offloaded $500 million in crude futures just 15 minutes before Trump postponed a planned strike on Iranian energy infrastructure, an event that triggered a 15% price collapse.
  • April 7: A massive $950 million bet against oil appeared just hours before the initial U.S.-Iran ceasefire was declared.
  • April 17: Short positions worth $760 million were initiated 20 minutes before the Iranian Foreign Minister announced the temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Regulatory Heat

Reports surfaced last week that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has launched an investigation into this series of high-value trades occurring on the eve of major shifts in U.S.-Iran policy.

While the White House reportedly issued a stern warning to staff last month against leveraging non-public information for futures market gains, the recurring nature of these "impeccable" bets suggests that sensitive diplomatic intelligence may still be leaking into the hands of select market participants.
