Korea’s AI Tailwinds Intensify: SK Hynix Nears Historic $1 Trillion Milestone

Just two weeks after Samsung Electronics crossed the $1 trillion market capitalization threshold at the beginning of the month, South Korea’s other memory powerhouse, SK Hynix, is on the verge of joining the elite "$1 Trillion Club."
SK Hynix Closes In on the $1 Trillion Mark
While SK Hynix shares dipped over 1% on Thursday—contrasting with Samsung’s record-breaking 3% rally—the company’s valuation remains near historic highs.
Based on Thursday’s stock price and current exchange rates.
SK Hynix’s market cap stands at approximately 1,391.2 trillion KRW, or roughly $931.7 billion. A further gain of just over 7% would see the chipmaker cross the $1 trillion mark.
The company's ascent has been meteoric:
- Year-to-Date: Shares have surged nearly 190%.
- Full-Year 2025: The stock skyrocketed a staggering 274%.
This explosive growth is primarily attributed to robust demand for traditional memory chips and specialized High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) essential for AI servers.
Currently, Samsung remains South Korea’s most valuable enterprise, with a market cap of 1,873.72 trillion KRW (approx. $1.25 trillion).
Should SK Hynix breach the $1 trillion level, South Korea would become the first nation outside the United States to host more than one company with a trillion-dollar valuation.
"The market is being driven by a sense of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), particularly surrounding AI-linked firms in Japan and South Korea," noted Fabien Yip, an analyst at IG Markets Australia.
KOSPI Emerges as a Global Performance Leader
Propelled by the rallies in Samsung and SK Hynix, South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index has seen a near-vertical climb in recent months, repeatedly setting new record highs as global and domestic investors flock to the two semiconductor giants.
Following a 75% surge in 2025, the KOSPI has gained more than 86% so far this year—marking its best annual performance since 1999. Since the beginning of 2025, the KOSPI has consistently outperformed every other major global equity benchmark.
The scale of this transformation is profound: only 16 months ago, SK Hynix’s market cap sat below $100 billion. Today, it rivals the valuations of global behemoths such as Walmart and Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway.
