With Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) poised to launch its landmark initial public offering (IPO) next month, the market's focus has turned to the primary beneficiaries of this historic wealth-creation event.

Beyond the prominent venture capital players dominating the cap table, a handful of low-profile, highly discreet hedge funds are positioned to emerge as the biggest winners of the public listing.

Chief among them are Dan Sundheim's D1 Capital Partners and Anand Desai's Darsana Capital Partners.

The Birth of New Multi-Billion Dollar Windfalls

According to sources familiar with the matter, if SpaceX achieves its targeted listing valuation of $1.75 trillion (a figure still subject to final market conditions), D1 Capital Partners could see its equity stake valued at approximately $20 billion.

Sundheim's D1 was among the few hedge funds to secure early exposure to SpaceX long before a public exit was a realistic consideration.

The firm first backed the rocket maker in 2020 when its private valuation stood at roughly $36 billion.

Through a disciplined accumulation strategy spanning primary funding rounds and secondary market block trades, D1 built its massive position at a cumulative cost basis of just $600 million.

Sundheim informed investors last year that he has no intention of paring back the position, despite fielding numerous highly substantive buyout inquiries.

Similarly, the intensely private hedge fund Darsana Capital Partners is set to capture a windfall exceeding $10 billion.

Founded by Anand Desai in 2014, Darsana initiated its SpaceX exposure in 2019 at a baseline valuation of roughly $33 billion.

Darsana subsequently expanded its position across multiple financing rounds and liquidity tender offers for SpaceX employees.

The fund further amplified its exposure via cross-investments in entities aligned with Elon Musk’s broader ecosystem, notably backing X (formerly Twitter) prior to its integration into SpaceX alongside xAI.

At the targeted $1.75 trillion IPO valuation, Darsana’s stake is projected to reach approximately $15 billion—a position that currently accounts for nearly 60% of the firm's assets under management.

This figure excludes additional indirect exposure held through its position in EchoStar, which previously entered into a spectrum licensing agreement with SpaceX settled partly in equity.

A Meteoric Valuation Trajectory

SpaceX's operational and financial expansion has accelerated dramatically over the past few years.

Its satellite internet constellation, Starlink, now serves as the company's primary financial engine, contributing more than half of its $18.7 billion total revenue last year alongside its core launch services.

Furthermore, Elon Musk orchestrated a massive expansion of SpaceX's balance sheet through a series of tactical corporate combinations involving X and xAI.

These maneuvers propelled SpaceX’s private valuation from under $400 billion less than a year ago to its current $1.25 trillion mark ahead of the public float.

The company's commercial footprint has broadened further in recent weeks, securing the right to acquire programming startup Cursor for $60 billion and entering a computing infrastructure agreement with AI lab Anthropic.

The Anthropic partnership, which involves leasing surplus compute capacity, is projected to generate an additional $5 billion in high-margin annual revenue.

Musk maintains that the next structural leg of growth for SpaceX will center on the deployment of orbital data centers.

Management asserts that space-based infrastructure can satisfy the massive, unyielding computational demands of generative AI models without navigating the land, power, and environmental bottlenecks that hinder terrestrial data center buildouts.

If successfully executed at its targeted scale, this record-breaking IPO will deliver unprecedented, asymmetric returns to its early venture backers, mutual funds, and institutional partners alike.
