Tonight's Highlights: US Stock Futures Edge Lower, Brent Crude Surfaces Above $98, and Bitcoin Breaches $67,000 Mark Downward
US stock index futures drifted lower Wednesday, aligning with a broad-based consolidation across major European equity benchmarks.
Pre-market economic indicators revealed that US ADP National Employment added 122,000 jobs in May, running ahead of consensus estimates of 117,000 and matching an upwardly revised 109,000 from the prior month.
On the geopolitical front, an overnight escalation of heavy artillery fire between US and Iranian forces put upward pressure on energy markets, even as the Trump administration noted that the broader ceasefire framework remains technically intact.
Brent crude oil futures advanced to hover near $98 per barrel as institutional desks systematically priced out expectations for a swift, near-term diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
In the previous trading session, the three major US stock indexes all notched fresh record closing highs, with the S&P 500 settling above the 7,600 threshold for the first time. A positive finish today would secure the index's longest consecutive winning streak since 1995.
Meghan Shue, Head of Investment Strategy at Wilmington Trust, noted that a positive weekly close would log a 10th consecutive week of gains for the S&P 500—marking its longest weekly winning streak since 1985. However, she cautioned that equities may be ripe for a tactical pause as summer trading commences.
“Market momentum remains exceptionally robust, backstopped by deep structural tailwinds including euphoric retail sentiment and insatiable demand generated by the AI infrastructure capex cycle. However, we are moving past the earnings season, which has been a primary fundamental catalyst,” Shue stated.
“We are likely entering a seasonal summer lull where aggregate volume tends to thin out while underlying geopolitical risks persist.”
She added: “I am not forecasting a severe correction, but a temporary plateau or even a shallow pullback accompanied by an uptick in localized volatility feels entirely healthy here, and it is highly typical as we transition into the summer months.”
Bitcoin broke below the $67,000 threshold, tracking broader digital asset liquidation after MicroStrategy disposed of a portion of its spot holdings.
The semiconductor complex registered broad pre-market gains, with Micron advancing over 1%, AMD climbing more than 2%, Intel jumping over 6%, ARM ticking up more than 1%, and Marvell Technology skyrocketing over 10%.
