Tonight's Highlights: Broadcom Slump Triggers Chip Sector Sell-Off, Nasdaq Futures Plunge Over 1% Pre-Market

US stock index futures tied to the tech-heavy Nasdaq tumbled over 1% in pre-market trading Thursday (June 4) as traders aggressively unloaded semiconductor equities following a disappointing earnings report from Broadcom.
As of press time, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures bucked the trend to advance 1.04%, while S&P 500 futures slipped 0.22% and Nasdaq 100 futures shed 1.04%.
Broadcom Inc. reported post-market Wednesday that its quarterly revenue legacy slightly missed consensus Wall Street estimates. Compounding the soft print, CEO Hock Tan refrained from upwardly revising the firm's full-year sales guidance, sending the stock down over 15% in pre-market action.
Prior to the print, the semiconductor complex had served as the undisputed backbone of the broader US equity bull market. Through Wednesday's close, the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) had locked in a massive year-to-date gain of 77.13%.
However, the vehicle slid over 3% in early pre-market trading Thursday, with heavy-weight constituents ARM, Micron, and Marvell each retreating roughly 6%.
The sudden anxieties permeating the core artificial intelligence trade effectively neutralized the geopolitical optimism generated by a sharp pullback in international crude benchmarks.
Shortly before press time, Lebanese President Michel Aoun stated that a formal ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel could take effect within 24 hours, pending final institutional approvals.
Keith Lerner, Chief Investment Officer and Chief Market Strategist at Truist Wealth, noted that the S&P 500 had captured nine consecutive weeks of gains prior to the drop, adding that "a sell-off following a rally of this velocity is entirely normal market behavior."
Concurrently, European equity benchmarks traded in a highly bifurcated range. Germany’s DAX index ticked up 0.68% and France’s CAC 40 advanced 1.2%, while the UK’s FTSE 100 drifted 0.06% lower.
