Last week, all three major U.S. stock indices recorded weekly losses, with the S&P 500 slipping 0.61%, the Nasdaq dropping 2.13%, and the Dow falling 0.38%.

Following a volatile week, U.S. equities face two major tests this week: first, the Federal Reserve's policy meeting, where investors hope to glean clues regarding the future rate trajectory; second, a dense slate of corporate earnings, with mega-cap tech and artificial intelligence leaders commanding the spotlight.

The Federal Reserve will announce its interest rate decision this Wednesday, with markets widely expecting the target range for the federal funds rate to hold steady at 3.50% to 3.75%.

Investor focus will center on the accompanying policy statement for hints on whether the Fed might enact a 25-basis-point rate hike at its next meeting in September. LSEG data indicates money markets have currently fully priced in that possibility.

Scott Wren, Senior Global Market Strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, noted: "If the market senses growing support among FOMC members for multiple rate hikes over the remainder of the year, that will become a real headwind for equities."

U.S. second-quarter GDP data will be released on Thursday, alongside weekly initial jobless claims and the Fed's preferred inflation gauge—the June Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index.

The Bank of England will announce its monetary policy decision on Thursday, with consensus pointing toward keeping interest rates unchanged at 3.75%.

The Bank of Japan will conclude its two-day policy meeting on Friday. Markets broadly expect the BOJ to keep monetary policy unchanged as policymakers continue assessing the impact of their previous rate hike, which raised the policy rate to 1%.

Roughly one-third of S&P 500 constituents report earnings this week, making it the busiest stretch of the Q2 earnings season. Key reporters include tech titans Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta, along with corporate heavyweights Visa, Chevron, and Coca-Cola.

Since the start of 2026, U.S. markets have operated under a distinct dynamic: tech giants deploying massive capital expenditure into AI face punishment from investors, while semiconductor manufacturers enjoy strong tailwinds.

This narrative was on full display in Alphabet's earnings last week and could similarly dictate how markets react to results from Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta this week.

On the surface, Alphabet posted solid numbers last week, but a raised capital expenditure forecast and a shift to negative free cash flow rattled investors, driving Google shares down nearly 8% for the week.

Ken Mahoney, CEO of Mahoney Asset Management, remarked: "The core concern among investors is that these companies are funneling all their cash flow into AI and data centers, leaving very little capital for share buybacks or dividends."

He added: "Beyond high-level narrative pitches, management teams have yet to articulate concrete financial returns on these vast investments."

Beyond U.S. tech giants, several memory chipmakers that have rallied strongly this year—including South Korea's SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, alongside Japan's Kioxia—are also slated to report this week. All three have benefited from heavy spending by hyperscale cloud providers.

This week also marks the final trading days of July. According to data from the Stock Trader’s Almanac, August and September historically represent the two weakest months of the year for the S&P 500 during midterm election years, dropping by an average of 0.4% and 0.8%, respectively.
