U.S. equities edged lower on Wednesday as slightly firmer-than-expected PCE inflation reinforced policy uncertainty. Nvidia’s results materially exceeded consensus estimates, confirming robust AI demand, but the initially muted after-hours response showed investors now require both strong execution and credible forward demand to support AI-led valuations.

Global Market Indices Update - 27 August 2026
U.S. stocks edged lower across all three major indexes on Wednesday. Fresh PCE inflation data came in slightly above expectations, while many investors chose to stay on the sidelines ahead of earnings from AI bellwether NVIDIA.

Commerce Department data showed July headline PCE inflation rose 3.7% year over year, slightly above market expectations, while core PCE increased 3.3%. The headline PCE price index rose 0.2% month over month, above the 0.1% forecast, and core PCE also rose 0.2%, versus 0.1% in June.

The latest inflation reading adds another variable to the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook and increases the importance of incoming economic data. Markets assign a 38.1% probability to a September rate increase, while investors will watch Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Friday remarks at the Jackson Hole symposium closely. Morgan Stanley Wealth Management’s Ellen Zentner said the data do not change the policy balance for September, but sustained firmer readings could pressure the Fed to move away from its wait-and-see stance.

Treasury yields were broadly steady after declining on Tuesday, having reached multiyear highs last week. Goldman Sachs Asset Management’s Greg Tuorto said the economy remains solid and corporate earnings have been notably strong, but uncertainty around policy guidance and Treasury actions is lifting risk premia.

NVIDIA shares fell 1.6% before its quarterly release. After the close, NVIDIA reported fiscal second-quarter revenue of $96.2 billion, up 106% year over year and above the $92.38 billion consensus estimate. Adjusted earnings per share were $2.22, up 120%, while data-center revenue reached $89.0 billion versus expectations of $85.86 billion.

For the fiscal third quarter, NVIDIA guided for revenue of $105.84 billion to $110.16 billion, compared with a $105.15 billion consensus estimate. Although its shares initially fell more than 2% after hours, they later rebounded sharply after its CFO projected roughly 70% revenue growth in fiscal 2028 and Amazon was reported to be buying 2 million NVIDIA chips for data-center expansion.

Key Takeaway: Slightly firmer PCE inflation kept policy uncertainty elevated, while NVIDIA’s earnings beat reaffirmed the scale of AI demand. The initially muted after-hours reaction shows investors now require both strong results and credible forward demand signals to sustain AI-led valuations.
Key Events
NVIDIA’s Earnings and Outlook Outrun Expectations
NVIDIA’s FY2027 Q2 revenue reached $96.2 billion, more than doubling year over year, and its next-quarter outlook also exceeded prior market expectations. The stock rebounded in after-hours trading after management said FY2028 revenue could grow about 70%, with supply expected to remain the principal constraint through that fiscal year.
FDA Clears Rasonque for Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer
The FDA approved Revolution Medicines’ Rasonque (daraxonrasib) for eligible metastatic pancreatic-cancer patients after prior therapy or when combination chemotherapy is unsuitable. The once-daily oral RAS inhibitor provides a new targeted option in a disease with limited treatment alternatives.
Meta Reaches Multistate Social-Media Addiction Settlement
Meta reached a multistate settlement over claims that Facebook and Instagram’s product design harmed young users. Court filings place the core settlement at $16.7 billion; including cited related agreements, total payments referenced in reporting approach $18 billion.

Institutional Views
BlackRockCONSTRUCTIVE
BlackRock prefers equity and private-infrastructure growth exposure as AI, power, chips and data centers create structural bottlenecks. It sees durable earnings support, while favoring selectivity and diversification amid a structurally higher cost of capital.
Charles SchwabCAUTIOUS
Charles Schwab sees global equity indices becoming more concentrated in technology and AI-related firms. It notes that diversification across regions, styles and less-correlated sectors can help manage the risk of a setback in AI capital spending.
J.P. Morgan Asset ManagementSELECTIVE
J.P. Morgan Asset Management sees AI investment driving strong earnings growth, with valuations not excessive at the broad-market level. It favors balancing exposure to AI beneficiaries with diversification by geography and style as momentum and concentration risks increase.
