Global Market Indices Update - 1 September 2026
As tensions in the Middle East intensified anew, rising oil prices reignited concerns about inflationary pressure, sending U.S. stocks, Treasuries and the dollar lower.

At the close, the S&P 500 fell 0.33% to 7,686.14, the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.12% to 26,370.89, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.70% to 53,185.9.

Tesla climbed more than 5% on Monday. Beyond the rollout of lower-priced Model 3 variants in additional markets, the CyberCab event later this week was also viewed as a catalyst. Meanwhile, Howmet Aerospace fell 7.51% after Elon Musk announced that SpaceX would enter the production of natural-gas turbine blades and guide vanes.

SanDisk, a memory-related stock, rallied sharply late in the session, moving from a slight loss to close up 5.5%. The company was added to the MSCI All Country World Index, effective after the close on August 31.

Escalating U.S.-Iran conflict lifted oil prices, while news on Venezuelan crude development added further support, driving broad gains across oil and gas names. GeoPark rose 11.9%, and Halliburton, Occidental Petroleum, Chevron and Exxon Mobil also advanced against the broader market trend.

Well-known camera-equipment maker GoPro surged 46.06% and extended its gains by more than 50% in after-hours trading. U.S. YouTube creator Markiplier announced that he holds an 8.5% stake in the company, making him its largest single shareholder.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose by nearly 4 basis points to its highest level since January 2025, implying a decline in Treasury prices. The U.S. Dollar Index also slipped 0.26% on Monday.

In a key development shaping Monday’s market sentiment, the United States and Iran launched attacks against each other for the first time in a month. U.S. forces struck an island in the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran retaliated against U.S. military targets in the United Arab Emirates and Jordan.

Recent reports also indicated that U.S. Central Command informed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan Caine and the White House that it may need to conduct “regular strikes against Iran” to reduce the risk of Iranian attacks on oil tankers, U.S. Navy vessels and Air Force aircraft.

A U.S. official said that Iran had fired a surface-to-air missile in recent days at a U.S. F-35 fighter jet participating in an escort operation in the Strait of Hormuz. Although the missile did not come close enough to pose a threat, the episode was seen as a sign that Iran is rebuilding its military capabilities.

As concerns over U.S. government debt intensified, fiscal and central-bank officials from major economies gathered in the United States on Monday. They were met with a joint call from the U.S. Treasury secretary and the Federal Reserve chair to use growth to reduce the debt burden.

Bessent reiterated on Monday: “The world is being drowned in debt, and the only way out is to grow our way out of it.”

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said in his opening remarks on Monday: “Long-term stagnation seems to be a distant past. The new era is one of sustained growth.”

Warsh added: “If I were to summarize this moment, I would say that the world is entering an investment boom. In the years before and after the global financial crisis, capital seemed to wait on the sidelines because opportunities were scarce. That does feel like a long time ago.”

The Fed chair further described the present as an era of “profound global economic transformation,” saying that one of his mentors has called it “a turning point in history.”

Key Takeaway: Renewed Middle East conflict lifted oil prices, heightened inflation concerns and weighed on U.S. risk assets. Energy stocks and Tesla outperformed, while Treasury yields rose and the dollar weakened.
