Global Market Indices Update - 4 September 2026
Dovish comments from a Federal Reserve official cooled rate-hike expectations and pushed Treasury yields lower, lifting all three major U.S. equity benchmarks by at least 1%. Technology also stayed in focus after OpenAI publicly unveiled GPT-6, adding momentum to the AI investment theme.

At the close, the S&P 500 gained 1.06% to 7,747.71, the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.40% to 26,584.06, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 1.18% to 53,686.11.

Fed Governor Christopher Waller said he would support keeping policy rates unchanged if inflation continues to show signs of easing, helping the S&P 500 post its largest gain in a month. “If we continue to make progress toward the 2% target, I would support holding the policy rate at its current level,” he said, while adding that stronger inflation data could warrant a hike.

Waller said next week’s August CPI report would weigh heavily on his policy decision. Following his remarks, CME FedWatch data showed the market-implied probability of a September rate increase falling to 50% from 63.2% a day earlier.

The 10-year Treasury yield edged lower again on Thursday, spot gold moved back toward $4,500 per ounce and the dollar extended its decline. Bitcoin broke above $81,000, reaching its highest level since May.

Investors now turn to Friday’s nonfarm payrolls report for further clues on the Fed’s policy path. Economists expect 55,000 jobs were added in August, broadly in line with the average pace of employment growth so far this year.

Key Takeaway: A softer policy signal and falling yields restored broad risk appetite, while GPT-6 kept the AI theme in the spotlight. Friday’s jobs report is the next catalyst for assessing whether the rate-driven rally can extend.
