Global Market Indices Update - 5 September 2026
U.S. equities closed lower after August nonfarm payrolls far exceeded expectations. The pullback remained contained, however, as storage, optical-communications and semiconductor-equipment shares climbed broadly.

At the close, the S&P 500 fell 0.38% to 7,718.60, the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.29% to 26,506.99, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.51% to 53,414.25. For the week, the S&P 500 added 0.09%, the Nasdaq rose 0.40%, while the Dow lost 0.27%.

August nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000, well above the 56,000 consensus forecast, reviving expectations for a September Federal Reserve rate increase. CME FedWatch showed the implied probability rising to 58.6%, from 50.0% a day earlier.

President Trump nevertheless urged Fed Chair Warsh to “be smart” and cut rates quickly. For markets, however, the inflation outlook remains more consequential than one payrolls report.

Charlie Ripley, senior investment strategist at Allianz Investment Management, said the jobs surprise materially shifted September hike expectations but did not settle the question. If forthcoming data show inflation has peaked, a September increase would be harder to justify, he added.

Investors now turn to next Friday’s CPI report ahead of the Fed’s September 15–16 meeting. The policy calculus could become more politically sensitive later in October, when the next meeting falls one week before the midterm elections. U.S. markets will be closed on Monday for Labor Day and reopen on Tuesday.

Key Takeaway: A resilient jobs report revived rate-hike concerns, but strength in selected technology supply-chain groups contained the broader selloff. Next week’s CPI release is the decisive catalyst for the September policy outlook.
