Global Market Indices Update - 22 September 2026
U.S. equities rallied on Monday as technology leaders moved sharply higher, sending the Nasdaq Composite to a fresh closing record for the first time in nearly four months.

At the close, the S&P 500 gained 1.49% to 7,764.70, the Nasdaq Composite rose 2.26% to 27,122.09, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.71% to 52,048.83.

Meta was the session’s major catalyst. Enthusiasm around the company’s personal AI assistant, Muse, reignited the AI trade after the app displaced ChatGPT as the most popular free iOS application in the United States.

Sensor Tower data indicated that Muse took the top position last Friday and remained No. 1 at the time of writing. Meta shares climbed 11.43% on Monday, adding more than $190 billion in market capitalization, or approximately RMB 1.29 trillion.

Meta describes Muse as a cloud-based AI task assistant for everyday users. Each user receives a dedicated virtual computer and browser that can connect to authorised applications, browse the web, complete forms, manage email, support shopping and assist with travel bookings.

The service is free for most users, with paid subscriptions available for users who require additional functionality and usage capacity. Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon said agentic technology has so far largely been built outside the mainstream consumer experience, but tools such as Muse may have broader adoption potential.

Meta is scheduled to host its annual Connect conference later this week, on September 23–24. Attention had previously centred on new smart-glasses products, but the integration of Muse with AI glasses is now likely to be a central theme.

The durability of Muse’s popularity remains uncertain, and the commercial response is already diverging. Amazon blocked Muse from accessing its website on Sunday, citing privacy and security concerns. An Amazon spokesperson said third-party applications that can purchase from other merchants on a customer’s behalf should operate transparently and respect a service provider’s decision on whether to participate.

In contrast, Shopify announced a partnership with Meta to introduce agentic checkout capabilities across its online stores. Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke said the platform would work with Muse to bring that functionality to merchants.

AMD rose nearly 10% on Monday, lifting its market capitalisation above $1 trillion for the first time and making it the fourth U.S. chip company to cross that threshold after Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron. Investors are reassessing potential CPU demand as consumer AI agents such as Meta’s Muse gain broader attention.

QQQ / AI & Megacap Tech$741.47▲ 2.88%
SMH / Semiconductors$596.03▲ 4.02%
Key Drivers: AI-linked equities led the session, with QQQ and SMH outperforming the broader market. Data-centre investment and projected AI-chip demand remain supportive, while power, cooling and grid capacity are key delivery constraints.
Outlook: The demand backdrop is constructive, but elevated expectations, deployment delays and concentration in megacap technology and semiconductor names can keep volatility high.

Baltic Dry Index (Sep 21)3,399▲ 0.86%
HARPEX 8,500 TEU (Sep 18)$79,000/day— 0.00%
Market Dynamics: The BDI rose to 3,399 on September 21, with Capesize leading broader gains across dry-bulk segments. The latest HARPEX weekly 8,500-TEU assessment remained unchanged at $79,000 per day, indicating elevated but stable container-charter conditions.
Outlook: Dry-bulk utilization has improved, but freight earnings remain sensitive to commodity volumes, seasonality and fleet growth. For containers, network disruption, fuel costs and congestion support effective capacity, while nominal fleet growth remains a medium-term easing risk.
